This course is aimed at scientific professionals, researchers, veterinary surgeons and laboratory technicians who work with laboratory animals and would like to improve their knowledge of animal welfare assessment using ethological methods. It explores how natural behaviours and behavioural indicators can reveal the state of animal welfare, contributing to more ethical research practices and more reliable data.

Learning objectives

  • Understanding the fundamental principles of ethology and their application in the laboratory.
  • Acquire the skills to observe, analyse and interpret animal behaviour and assess animal welfare.

  • Observing and measuring behaviour: qualitative assessment (e.g. qualitative pain grid, quality of life assessment, QBA) and quantitative assessment (ethological methods).
